Brompton Electric Upgrade Kits

At the end of 2021 we initiated a process of upgrading all Brompton Electric bikes with two important design upgrades, developed after capturing customer feedback.

Since this action, we have received reports of issues with the mudguard on some Brompton Electric bikes which has resulted in injury. All incidents have occurred with bikes that have not been fitted with the new mudguard upgrade.

Our community of riders and their experience using a Brompton is of the utmost importance to us, which is why we’re offering free upgrades on all Brompton Electric bikes, globally.

What’s included?

  • Battery catch: The battery catch has been modified to reduce the movement between the battery and the bike. This minimises battery disconnections, prolonging the life of the electronics and improving ride experience. For more information, click here for the datasheet.
  • Front mudguard stay: The updated stay geometry increases clearance between the mudguard and tyre to improve performance on non-paved surfaces. For more information, click here for the datasheet.

What is the issue?

In specific circumstances if an object of a certain size becomes trapped between the bike’s mudguard stay and tyre, it can result in the mudguard getting caught on the tyre, and the bike’s wheel rotation becoming inhibited or stopping suddenly.

Although the risk of an accident occurring is very low, the safety of our customers is of the utmost importance to us, and we have now begun a programme to repair all affected bikes as part an official recall.

Which bikes are affected?

Brompton Electric bikes with a serial number lower than 2111030089, which have not already had the upgraded mudguard stay and battery catch fitted, will require the upgrade.

The 10-digit serial number is located on the seat tube below the seat clamp. You can view the video on how to locate the serial number here.

We recommend that all Brompton Electric owners use the Interactive Bike Checker on the following webpage to check if their bike is affected before contacting their local Brompton Electric Retailer to perform the upgrade:

  • Not hugely helpful.  My local shop is getting 4 of these a week and won't put me on a waiting list "because I've already got more than 30 on it so it isn't worth it".  Havebike who service my Brompton and performed a software upgrade last year are not able to provide this service for some reason.  Would have been helpful to have made all this clear in the email when it first went out and would suggest this is done if any more comms are sent out. Thanks
